ROB Flooks impressed on his Alresford Town debut in a 2-0 FA Vase second qualifying round win at Cowes Sports.

The former Fawley and AFC Totton defender, newly-signed from Winchester City, was named ‘Magpie of the week’ for his part in the victory.

Goals by Mo Nyang and Babs Bojang steered Alresford back on track after knockout defeats against Cadbury Heath (FA Cup) and Eastleigh (Hampshire Senior Cup).

Cowes travel to Brockenhurst in the Sydenhams Premier Division tomorrow (Tuesday, 7.30), while Alresford host Horndean on Wednesday.

*The all-Sydenhams One FA Vase clash at Christchurch ended 3-1 in Romsey Town’s favour. Craig Bryant’s opener for the Bypass boys was followed by a Tom Donaldson brace. Romsey, though, ended the game with ten men after Amadeusz Skrzyniarz had seen red.

*Michael Charles’s Alton Town came from behind to topple higher league Henley 4-2 in the Vase through Scott Sanderson, Ben Hutchings, Ash Pecks and Henry Fox.

*Steve Stone bemoaned a “poor” performance by his Fareham Town side as they crashed out of the FA Vase 5-1 at Sydenhams One newcomers Shaftesbury.

The Reds were 2-1 down when the referee forced them to replace Zach Szemis because of a stud earring that could not be removed.

That disruption didn’t help, but Town were well beaten as Shaftesbury’s Jamie Samways, Szymon Matuszewski and sub Lee Gale added to a goal in each half from 17-year-old Aiden Beardmore. Callum Laycock scored Fareham’s consolation goal.

No such problems for Horndean who beat Oldland Abbotonians 2-0 at Five Heads Park thanks to a Josh Maloney penalty and a Rob Tambling strike.

*Highworth Town – FA Vase semi-finalists in 2015 – proved too strong for Bashley in the second qualifying round on Saturday.

The Hellenic Premier outfit emerged handsome 4-0 winners at Bashley Road having taken the lead with a close-range header from ex-Swindon Supermarine hotshot Ash Edenborough.

Keiron Gleed made it 2-0 at half-time and Bashley went close to halving the deficit when Jesse Gould’s looping shot hit the bar.

Losing the height of Lewis Aimson to injury didn’t help the Foresters’ cause and, although they continued to create chances, Edenborough struck again on 82 minutes before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

It was also an afternoon to forget for Bashley’s New Forest neighbours Brockenhurst who exited the Vase 3-1 at Bournemouth. Poppies trio Chris Speers, Fawzi Saadi and Ali Fakhal inflicted the damage.
