AT 47, Saints icon Matt Le Tissier is not quite old enough to sign playing forms for Eastleigh Over-50s Walking Football Club.

But some would say that, as the club's new president, 'Le God' is the perfect fit for a team who like to play the game at a more leisurely pace.

During his Dell days, Le God’s languid style was legendary, popping up wherever he pleased to stake his claim as one of English football’s ultimate showmen.

When Eastleigh first ventured into walking football, former first-team boss Richard Hill became their initial president.

But with Hill having departed last September, Le Tissier, who briefly played for the Spitfires after hanging up his professional boots, has agreed to take the helm.

Eastleigh’s thriving walking football club now boasts in excess of 65 members, ranging from the spritely 50-somethings to the timeless Norman Pendlebury who is their oldest member, aged 86.

“We now get a regular 30 to 35 people turning up every Thursday morning (11.30am) at the Silverlake for their weekly football session,” said secretary Ray Murphy.

“We are delighted to be able to announce Saints legend and former Eastleigh player Matt Le Tissier as our new president.”

Walking football is a slower-placed version of the game, giving older players an excellent opportunity for a bit of physical activity and the chance to get out of the house and meet new people.

There are two key differences between walking football and the standard game – no running and no slide tackling.

Plenty of breaks ensure the players enjoy a safe and enjoyable return to football but, despite the slower pace, the game is still competitive and more than just a stroll in the park.

If you are on the more mature side of life and want to play the game you love, keep fit and socialise, then this is for you.
