How is it that the Tory chancellor says he is able to “find” the money for further tax cuts, but not for adequate funding of the services on which we all depend to live productive, healthy and happy lives.

Hampshire is no different to any other part of the country in this regard, and here we see bus services being slashed, GP and dental appointments unavailable when needed, the infrastructure from roads to water to railways crumbling, affordable child care out of reach for many parents.

The argument made is that tax cuts fund investment, spending and economic growth, but the truth of the matter is that despite what we are told, there are in fact no tax cuts and taxes remain at the highest level since the 1970s and are still increasing. We can see plainly at a local level that the services that we rely on to live economically productive lives, such as healthcare, childcare and transport are being steadily stripped of funding, putting a bigger tax burden on fewer workers in an increasingly vicious circle.

The next time the chancellor “finds” a few billion pounds, I suggest he invests it more wisely.
