It was good to read about the work being done at St Giles Hill Graveyard ('Volunteers join bid to bring back elm trees', Chronicle, February 15).

The graveyard is a gem, and the elm trees being planted there will be a welcome addition.

However, it isn't quite correct to say that 'there are no elms resistant to Dutch elm disease in the Winchester area'.  I know of at least one, which was planted in a corner of the West Hill Cemetery in 1988 in memory of my late husband.  Admittedly it is a solitary specimen, but it is still there and maturing very nicely.
