One is going to spruced up, the other will be knocked down.

Winchester city councillors have been discussing the future of the Guildhall and the fate of the former council depot on Bar End Road.

The council's newly-agreed capital investment strategy including spending £485,000 on improvements at the Guildhall.

Two hundred thousand pounds has been set aside for the demolition of the depot buildings. The site is being marketed for development with no firm decisions on what might be built on the prime site. Ideas have included housing, commercial and retail.

Council chief executive Laura Taylor told the scrutiny committee that there were no immediate plans for demolition.

At the Guildhall the council is investing to improve fire safety to maintain its attraction as a venue for weddings, proms, conferences and graduations.

The council is also marketing 17th century Abbey House, the mayor's official residence, as a upmarket wedding venue.

Ms Taylor said the Guildhall work is intended to maintain the Guildhall at a standard that make it attractive. "We are making sure we are sweating the estate as much as we can," she said.

A new manager has been appointed to oversee its business growth as it recovers from the Covid interruption.
