Swirling draperies may be controversial, but it is much more important that the proposed statue commemorates the work of the Basingstoke "chippie" who made Jane Austen's writing table (Chronicle, November 30). 

As Rupert Willoughby has pointed out in his book on the subject, one of the major contributions of Basingstoke to world culture.
