A decades-old photo of a naval officer found at a car boot sale has not yet been reunited with its original owner.
Jeanette Hallum, from Winchester, found the old photograph hidden in a photo frame that she bought for 50p at a car boot sale.
She immediately started looking for the sailor’s family by sharing her story with the Hampshire Chronicle.
The appeal was seen by Winchester resident Corinne Mason, who thought the sailor could be her uncle, George Appelbe.
However, after more research into the cap and badge found that although it was around the right time, it is of a Royal, not Merchant, Navy officer.
Other contributors wrote in to help with the search, explaining that the badge on the sailor’s cap would make him a chief petty officer.

Jeanette still hopes to reunite him with his rightful owner.
Finding the picture reminded Jeanette of a similar photo she has of her own father who was also a sailor.
She said: “It makes me very emotional because I think of the picture of my dad and what it would feel like if someone gave him back to me.”
