PEOPLE in Romsey are waking up this morning to the news that the UK has voted to leave the EU.

A 51.9 per cent majority for leaving the EU was counted in Test Valley as people turned out in their thousands to vote.

The result was a direct reflection of the rest of the country which has voted to withdraw its membership from the European Union.

England and Wales voted strongly to leave the EU while Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain.

The pound slumped to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the results.

Uncertainty in the markets is set to continue throughout today.

The turnout in the referendum was 71.8 per cent with more than 30 million people voting, the highest since 1992.

Speaking outside Number 10 this morning, Prime Minister David Cameron, said he would resign in October.

He said: “The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their vote must be respected.”

Nigel Farage, UKIP leader, who has campaigned for the country to leave declared this as UK’S "independence day" but the Remain camp called it a "catastrophe".
