PUPILS at a Southampton school have learnt that a little bit of help can go a long way.

They have been collecting donations for our favourite furry friends.

Children who are part of Oakwood School’s pupil voice delivered hundreds of goodies to the Second Chance Animal Rescue.

Among the donations were leads, collars, pet food, treats, toys and even cat baskets.

The decision to help Second Chance was inspired by a guest appearance in an assembly.

Year Four teacher Jane Patchett brought her Collie-Alsation cross, rescued from the charity seven years ago, into school to meet the children.

Posters were put up around the school and the donations were collected in just a week.

Rose Milne, rescue co-ordinator at Second Chance, said: “To take in just one cat costs £100 in vet fees and that is considering they are healthy before they are given to us.

“I hope that puts into perspective just how grateful we are to receive the donations from the children at Oakwood – cat food donations are really helpful when our vet fees are so expensive.”
